What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ for short, is a martial art from Brazil that developed out of Japanese judo. On the ground, you make your partner tap out with joint locks and chokes – there are no punches or kicks. That’s why BJJ is considered one of the safest combat sports for everyday life.
Technique beats strength: if you understand leverage, timing and balance, you can control stronger opponents too. That’s why BJJ is called “chess on the mat,” and why women and men, teens and adults all train together with us.
There are no forms or punching bags: every technique is practiced right away with a partner and tested in sparring against resistance. In the gi you use grips on the fabric; in no-gi you train in a rashguard and shorts, faster and more dynamic. You can learn both at ZR TEAM VIENNA, and competing is optional.

FAQ about BJJ in Vienna
Do I need experience to start at ZR TEAM VIENNA?
No. For BJJ in Vienna with no experience, there’s the 6-Week Beginner Course without a gi and the ongoing Fundamentals class in the gi. Both are for beginners only, so nobody there starts with a head start.
How much does training cost?
The trial class is free. After that, the annual membership costs 103 € per month and includes all classes, open mats and the strength area. You’ll find the 6-month membership, monthly pass, student and kids rates on the prices page.
Gi or no-gi: which is better for beginners?
Both work. In the gi you learn grips and control in great detail; no-gi is faster and closer to wrestling and MMA. Just try both – with an annual membership you can attend all classes anyway.
From what age can kids train?
From age 4. Kids classes are split by age (ages 4 to 6 and 7 to 10), and teens ages 11 to 15 have their own gi and no-gi classes.
Can I train in the morning or early in the day?
Yes. On Monday and Thursday, Early Bird starts at 7:00, from Tuesday to Friday there are classes at 9:30, and on Monday the day starts with BJJ All Levels and open mat at 10:00.
Is BJJ suitable for women?
Absolutely: technique and leverage count for more than strength. Women train in all classes and also have a ladies-only class on Fridays at 16:45.
